Running Gear

As a new runner, choosing running gear can be very overwhelming. The first step should be getting fitted for running shoes at a local running store. The people who work at specialty running stores have been trained on how to fit shoes and fit the right pair for the amount/type of running you do. Trust the experts when it comes to buying running shoes! That being said, once you find your perfect fit and you find a shoe that you like; I recommend checking out Running Warehousefor great deals. I wear Saucony Kinavara for racing, and Saucony Peregrine for trail running.  Can you tell I’m a fan of Saucony?!

After getting fitted for shoes, I suggest finding a well fitted sports bra. The wrong sports bra can cause chafing, poor posture, and just an overall uncomfortable run. Take the time try out a few different styles whether it’s at Target or TJMaxx (both places have great selections). It may take a few trials before you find the perfect fit, but it will be worth it. If you find a certain cut or style that you like, I recommend checking out Oiselle for future purchases. The all-women’s brand is my personal favorite, however it is a little pricey. I only own a few pieces from Oiselle, but I really enjoy each and every one of them.  I am a fan of the Hi Ten Bra.

To complete your running outfit, you’ll need some tops and shorts. I normally get my tops from wherever they are on sale for the best price (usually TJMaxx or Marshall’s).  I am a little more picky when it comes to my bottoms. For shorts, I prefer the Oiselle Flyout Running Shortsand the Nike Temp Shorts.  For capris, I like anything from Adidas.

The more you fall in love with running, the more you’ll want to invest in gear that makes your runs more enjoyable. Don’t feel obligated to buy “all things running” right away. At the end of the day, the only piece of gear that you really need is shoes.  There is no right or wrong way to “look like a runner.” Having a solid collection of running gear takes time, years even. Below is a list of a few of my other favorite running gear items:

  • a GPS watch, I use the Garmin Forerunner 35
  • Handheld water bottle, you find a great selection at Nathan
  • Identification band from Road ID
  • Running socks, Running Warehouse always has pairs on sale.
