Fueling on the run is an important part of training and racing. Over the years, I have tried and tested many products. There is quite a selection out there, from gels to chews to waffles! Some products upset my stomach, had an unusual texture, or just simply did not taste good. Every runner has their favorites and below I have shared mine with you! Ofcourse, as with any running product, I suggest trying it out on a test run before using it during a race.
- Nuun– Electrolyte enhanced tablets for your water. The tables are made from plant based ingredients, vegan/gluten free, low sugar/calories, and genuinely tastes great. I simply drop a tablet into my water and the tablet dissolves into a much healthier sports drink alternative. My favorite flavors are strawberry lemonade and fruit punch.
- Gu Energy– I remember the first time I ever had Gu, it was my freshman year of cross country and my captain offered us Gu before our first meet. I think I thought it was a drug and I was so scared to take it, needless to say- years later I’m still hooked (and no, Gu is not a performance enhancing drug like my fifteen year old self thought, its a just an easily digestible energy gel!) The gels are in a small portable pouch, containing around 100 energy dense calories of carbs/sodium/amino acids, and are easy on the stomach. Gu makes gels with caffeine too, if you need an extra boost during your race or long run. My favorite flavors are strawberry banana and mixed berry.
- Honey Stinger Waffles– Waffles? On the run? Yes! Honey Stinger makes organic waffles with a thin layer of honey to create an energy source for runners before, during, and after a workout. The honey provides a natural source of energy and antioxidants. These waffles help me prevent fatigue and support the endurance I need to keep me going.
