Top 10 Spots for the Outdoorsy Soul in Columbia, South Carolina

We reside in the Palmetto State of South Carolina. We love exploring the deep forests full of pine trees, the beaches along small coastal towns, and basking in the year-around warm weather. There are lots of things to do and places to see for the outdoorsy soul. Below is a list of our favorite spots in the states’s capitol, Columbia.

  1. Harbison State Forest– roughly 2,000 acres and 18 miles of trails for hiking, running, and mountain biking.  You can also canoe here as it has a landing into the Broad River.
  2. Congaree National Park- our state’s very own national park! Roughly 26,000 acres of lush trees and swampland.  A great place to hike and observe the wildlife in the “largest intact expanse of old growth bottomland hardwood forest”.
  3. Mast General Store- grab your hiking, camping, (and any other outdoor activity) gear here.  You can also find old-fashioned candy, men and women’s fashion, and home décor.
  4. Half Moon Outfitters- climbing, kayaking, and backpacking gear (plus apparel).  Located in downtown Columbia, this store will have all of your favorite outdoor brands (and my personal favorite, Patagonia).
  5. Backpacker Quality Gear- South Carolina’s original outfitter that is known for their quality service.  Discover running, trekking, climbing, and hiking equipment here that has been tested by the staff— these people know their stuff!
  6. Sesquicentennial State Park- located only three miles outside of downtown.  Approximately 1,4000 acres to explore and hike.  You can also rent a paddleboard, let your dog loose at the two acre dog park, and camp overnight!
  7. Saluda Shoals Park- a 400 acre riverfront park full of paved/unpaved trails that you can run, hike, bike, and even horse back ride! This park also features a “rent a bike” and “rent a canoe/kayak” service.
  8. Outspoken- your one stop shop for all your biking needs.  Whether you enjoy road biking or mountain biking, this shop has it all! Clothes, helmets, nutrition, bikes, repairs, race advice, you name it— Outspoken can help you out.
  9. Columbia Canal & Riverfront Park- a downtown walking and biking trail along the river.  Hop on this 2.5 mile paved trail for free, run with your dog, enjoy a picnic on the benches, or play with your kids on the playground.
  10. Fleet Feet- get fitted for walking and running shoes by the experts. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly, they even offer training programs!
